Tequila is a distilled spirit made from the sugars found in the blue agave plant and can only be produced primarily in Jalisco and other parts of Mexico including Guanajuato, Michoacán, Tamaulipas and Nayarit. Unlike whisky where the key component is the ageing process itself, producing a great tequila requires a significant amount of time invested in cultivation. That said, blue agave plants usually take a minimum of six years to mature whereas those planted in the highlands require a longer period to reach maturity, sometimes up to a decade.Once ripe, the plant’s core is cooked, which allows for the sugars to be extracted then fermented, distilled and sometimes aged. The length of which tequila is aged in barrels helps to determine the depth of colour and the intensity of wood or oak character in the flavours. Another factor that contributes to the flavourings of tequila is where the agave plants are sourced. Oftentimes, agave plants from the highlands produce sweeter and fruitier tasting tequila whilst plants from the lowlands yield a more earthy flavour.
How To Enjoy Tequila
Deemed as one of the most popular tequila drinks, this stunning and refreshingly fruity cocktail is easy to make and certainly not rocket science. In a highball glass filled with ice cubes, pour the tequila and orange juice then stir well. Next, slowly pour the grenadine around the centre of the glass. The key here is to avoid stirring the drink after adding the syrup, otherwise you’ll have a blush pink rather than the classic orange and red layers. By adding grenadine into the mix, this helps to balance out the tart orange juice with the sweetness of the pomegranate-flavoured syrup. However, if you want a taste of the original tequila sunrise, grab yourself fresh lime juice, crème de cassis and club soda for an entirely different but equally delicious taste.
When it comes to this sparkling beverage, there are two elements that are essential – tequila and grapefruit. To begin, rim a Collins glass with salt. This is an optional step but the trick here is to wet the rim with a lime wedge then roll it in a small dish of salt. Fill the glass with ice cubes and add the tequila as well as fresh lime juice. To top it off, pour grapefruit soda into the mix and enjoy a glass of this thirst-quenching tequila cocktail!
With only tequila, triple sec and fresh lime juice, you too can have a taste of this iconic drink. Contrary to popular belief, a margarita glass is not required and there are three main ways to serve a margarita – straight up, on the rocks or frozen. Depending on your liking, you can opt to rim the glass with salt or sugar or simply leave it bare. There are plenty of variations to enjoy a glass of margarita and what makes it a favourite is that anyone can make it.
